On Amazon, the Buy Box usually changes hands over a few cents, not big price swings. If a competitor drops their price for a few minutes and grabs the Buy Box, checking once an hour means you've already missed it. Buy Box ownership changes hands constantly, so you have to query the product page several times a minute. Amazon shows price, stock and the seller list according to the country a request comes from. Query amazon.de from an IP outside Germany and you can end up with the wrong price, incomplete seller data or an automatic redirect. Using a residential IP located in the target country gives you the genuine view of that marketplace.
There is no fixed number; Amazon applies its thresholds based on the past behavior of the IP the request comes from. In practice the safest route is to raise your request rate gradually, watch for 429/503 responses, apply backoff when you see them, and spread traffic across a wide residential pool.
Using a proxy when signing in to Seller Central falls under Amazon's account security rules and has to be handled carefully; frequent logins from different IPs can get an account flagged. Here a proxy is mainly for automation against public pages — competitor analysis, price monitoring and catalog crawling — not for account logins.
It usually comes down to too many product page requests from the same IP in a short window, a browser fingerprint that matches a bot pattern, or an IP other users abused earlier. Moving to a high-trust residential or mobile IP and tuning your request rate to the target's tolerance reduces CAPTCHA frequency noticeably.
The more ASINs you follow, the faster queries from a single IP get detected. Rotating through a residential proxy pool spreads your requests across a large number of different IPs, so you can raise your query frequency while keeping the risk of being blocked low.
Review pages are subject to bot detection just like product pages. Leaving reasonable waits between requests, keeping User-Agent and browser headers realistic, and spreading your requests across a residential IP pool cut ban risk substantially when combined.
Amazon knows datacenter IP ranges well and throttles heavy traffic from them far sooner than residential traffic. Datacenter proxies are worth trying for low-volume, occasional checks; but for continuous ASIN/Buy Box tracking or crawling thousands of pages a day, a residential or mobile IP pool delivers far more reliable results.
