# What to Look for When Buying a Proxy: 10 Questions

The same story turns up on forums again and again: someone finds the cheapest plan, sets the proxy up, and on day one everything works. On day two the target site starts showing a verification screen, or the traffic allowance runs out before the month does. Most of the time the proxy itself is not at fault. The product simply does not match the job: an IP that changes on every request was bought for a logged-in account, or a task that downloads hundreds of images a day was put on a plan billed per GB.

This post does not list providers. It walks through ten questions to ask before you buy, in order: IP type, billing and a monthly traffic estimate, location, rotation, protocol, where the IPs come from, trial and refund terms. After that come the warning signs, a decision table and a test plan for the first 24 hours. There is no code here, and technical terms are explained where they first appear.

## Which questions should you ask before buying a proxy?

The ten questions below are the skeleton of this post. The order matters: the first two decide most of the budget, the rest narrow the options.

1. What job am I buying this proxy for, and which IP type fits that job?
2. What is the bill based on: data transferred or number of IPs?
3. Which country, and if needed which city, do I have to appear from?
4. Should the IP change on every request, stay fixed for a while, or never change?
5. Which protocol and which authentication method does my tool support?
6. Is the IP reserved for me, or shared with other customers?
7. Where does the provider get these IPs?
8. How small is the smallest plan, and is there a trial or a refund?
9. Do the dashboard, API, support and payment side suit the way I work?
10. What will I test on the first day after buying?

## 1. Which IP type fits your job?

A proxy is an intermediary server that sends your request out from its own IP address. What separates the types is who that IP address is registered to. A target site can look up whether the address belongs to a data center, an internet service provider (ISP) or a mobile carrier, and act on the answer. The trap here is buying whichever type looks "strongest". If your target answers data center addresses without trouble, buying residential means paying more than you need to for the same job. On a site that does look at IP type, a datacenter plan is money wasted.

## 2. Billing: per GB, per IP or unlimited?

Anyone comparing proxy types and prices notices the same thing first: the prices cannot be compared directly. One product is priced per GB, another per IP per month. The reason is where the cost arises.

- **Per GB (pool model).** This is how residential and mobile proxies are sold. You get access to every IP in the pool and pay for the data you transfer. It works out cheaper for jobs that pull little data but need many different IPs.
- **Per IP per month.** This is how datacenter and static ISP proxies are sold. You rent a set number of IPs, and with most providers there is no traffic cap. It works out cheaper for jobs that push heavy traffic through the same few IPs.
- **Reserved capacity.** For jobs that bulk-download heavy files such as video and audio, a GB counter stops making sense; the quote is prepared by volume. At Proxynet this is the [high-bandwidth proxy](/high-bandwidth-proxy) page, and the price is agreed with the sales team.

When you read an offer, check these as well: does unused GB expire, is the number of concurrent connections limited, is country or city targeting charged separately? Items like these change the advertised unit price in practice.

### How do you estimate your monthly GB?

If you are going to pay per GB, base the estimate on your own measurement, not on the provider's calculator. The formula is simple:

**Monthly data = data transferred per page × pages per day × number of days**

Your browser tells you the data transferred per page. Open the target page in Chrome, start Developer Tools with F12, switch to the Network tab and reload the page. The status bar at the bottom of the panel shows the total data transferred for that page; the details are in the [Chrome DevTools documentation](https://developer.chrome.com/docs/devtools/network/reference#total-size). Repeat the measurement on a few different pages and take the average.

Two corrections bring the estimate closer to reality. A page opened in a browser also downloads images, fonts and scripts; a script that fetches only the HTML transfers a small part of that. Read the measurement according to the tool you will actually use. Requests that fail and are retried also count towards the meter, so add a margin and watch your real consumption in the dashboard during the first month.

## 3. Which country and city do you need, and how do you verify the location?

Ignore the total number of countries on the sales page and look at your own need: is the country you need on the list, can you choose at city level there, are there enough IPs in that location? Whether the location is accurate is a separate matter. The city an IP appears in is decided by geolocation databases, not by the provider, and those databases can disagree with each other. After buying, check the IP on two different IP lookup sites, then see whether the target site serves region-specific content (currency, language, delivery area) correctly. ## 4. How often should the IP change: rotating, sticky or static?

There are three options, and the job itself tells you which one is right.

- **Rotating:** the IP changes on every request or at short intervals. It suits jobs that fetch many pages independent of each other. See: [Rotating Proxy](https://proxynet.io/rotating-proxy).
- **Sticky:** the same IP is kept for the period you set, 1 to 60 minutes, and changes when that period ends. It suits flows completed within one session, such as a login, a cart or a multi-step form. See: [Sticky Proxy](https://proxynet.io/sticky-proxy).
- **Static:** the IP does not change for as long as you rent it. You need it to manage your accounts from the same address over a long period, or to be added to the other party's IP allowlist.

Ask the provider: how long can the sticky period be set, and can the IP be refreshed manually before it runs out? Trying to run a session-based job on a rotating proxy is the most common mismatch: the site sees the IP change in the middle of the session and asks you to log in again. ## 5. Which protocol and authentication method are supported?

Proxies speak one of two protocols. An HTTP(S) proxy is for web traffic; when connecting to HTTPS sites it opens a tunnel to the destination with [the CONNECT method defined in RFC 9110](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc9110#name-connect). SOCKS5 is a more general protocol that can also carry applications outside the web, and [RFC 1928](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc1928) defines a separate command for UDP traffic. For a browser or a scraping library, HTTP(S) is usually enough; game clients and desktop applications want SOCKS5. The comparison is in [SOCKS vs. HTTP Proxy](/blog/socks-vs-http-proxy).

Before you buy, read the documentation of the tool you will use. Some tools accept only HTTP proxies, and some do not support a username and password over SOCKS5.

There are two authentication methods: username and password (user:pass) and the IP whitelist. With the second, you tell the provider your own IP address and connect without entering a password. Be careful if you connect from home: if your line is behind CGNAT, the IP you show to the outside is shared with other subscribers and can also change without you noticing. This is common on mobile connections and with many home internet providers. An IP whitelist does not hold on such a line; choose a product that supports user:pass. ## 6. Is the IP reserved for you alone?

A dedicated (private) IP is yours alone for the rental period. A shared IP is used by other customers at the same time. Shared IPs are cheap, but everything someone else does with that address goes on your record too: if the address has been blocked on a site or has landed on a blacklist, you live with that as well. ## 7. Where do providers get their IPs?

A question that comes up often on forums: "Where do proxy rental sites get this many IPs?" There are four main sources.

- **Data center blocks.** The provider leases IP blocks from hosting companies, or assigns blocks registered in its own name to its servers. This is a datacenter proxy.
- **ISP agreements.** The IP block is registered to an internet service provider, but the addresses sit on servers in a data center. This is a static ISP proxy.
- **Consent-based residential networks.** Home users agree, usually through an app and in return for something, to share part of their connection. Requests go out through these devices.
- **Carrier lines.** With mobile proxies, traffic reaches the 4G/5G network through modems with SIM cards or through mobile devices whose owners have given consent.

The third item is where you need to question the provider. There are also methods that add a home user's device to a network without the user knowing; working over such a network is both an ethical and a legal risk. Look for a clear page on the provider's site that explains how user consent is obtained; if there is none, ask.

You can also check for yourself who an IP is registered to. Enter the IP address in a tool such as [RIPEstat](https://stat.ripe.net/) and you see the number of the network the address belongs to (the ASN) and its holder. If an address sold as an "ISP proxy" resolves to a hosting company, the product is not what it was described as.

## 8. What are the smallest plan, the trial and the refund terms?

No feature table can tell you how a proxy will behave on your target site. You find that out by trying, which is why the cost of trying matters.

- **Smallest plan.** Can you buy a few IPs or a few GB, or does the entry plan demand a large commitment?
- **Trial.** Is there a free or low-cost trial, and does it require identity verification?
- **Refund.** Are the terms in writing, how long is the window, and does it lapse once a certain usage threshold is passed?
- **Renewal.** Is auto-renewal on by default, and can a static IP that is about to expire be extended with the same address?

However attractive a long-term discount looks, make the first purchase for the shortest period. You can still buy the annual plan after you have seen that the proxy suits your job.

## 9. Do the dashboard, API, support and payment suit you?

This sits at the bottom of feature lists and is the part you feel most in daily use.

- **Dashboard:** can you see remaining traffic, the IP list and usage history?
- **API:** if you are going to manage dozens of IPs, you need an API to pull the list and track usage.
- **Support:** in which language, during which hours? Asking a question before you buy and timing the reply is a good test.
- **Payment and invoicing:** is there a payment method you can use, and is an invoice issued to your company?
- **Company details:** does the site show a legal entity, an address, terms of use and a privacy policy?

## 10. What should you test in the first 24 hours after buying?

While the refund window is still open, try the proxy on your real job. The order could be:

1. **IP check.** Did the visible IP change with the proxy on? Does it change from request to request on a rotating product, and stay the same on a static one?
2. **Location check.** Check the IP on two different IP lookup sites and on the target site itself.
3. **Speed and stability.** A single measurement misleads; repeat the same test at different times of the day.
4. **Target site.** Run your actual job at a small volume and look at the share of successful responses.

6. **Consumption.** If you pay per GB, read one day's usage from the dashboard and compare it with your estimate.

## Which warning signs should make you walk away?

- **A seller with no company details.** A seller who trades only through a messaging account and issues no invoice leaves you with nobody to turn to when something goes wrong.
- **"Lifetime unlimited residential."** Residential traffic costs the provider money per GB. A promise of unlimited residential for ever, for a one-off payment, does not fit that arithmetic.
- **A "never blocked on any site" guarantee.** Whether a request is accepted is decided by the target site; the IP is only one input to that decision. An honest provider does not make such a promise.
- **A residential network that does not disclose its IP source.** If you cannot get an answer to question seven, look at another provider.
- **Free proxy lists.** A server run by an unknown party can see the traffic passing through it. We explained the risks in our post on [whether free proxies are safe](/blog/are-free-proxies-safe).

## Short examples by use case

- **Competitor price tracking.** Many product pages, light HTML responses: residential per GB, or datacenter if the target allows it. The setup is on our [price monitoring](/price-monitoring) page.

## Common mistakes

- **Looking at the price first and the job second.** A cheap plan that does not fit the job ends up being the costly one.
- **Choosing a plan without measuring your GB need.** Image-heavy pages transfer more data than people expect.
- **Buying a rotating proxy for a job that needs a session.** Every logged-in flow wants a sticky or static IP.
- **Buying a whitelist-only product while your home line is behind CGNAT.** The connection works for a day and drops when the IP changes.
- **Expecting invisibility from a proxy.** A proxy changes your IP address; it does not change cookies, the browser fingerprint or your account's history.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you buy a proxy?

The flow is the same with most providers: you open an account, top up a balance or choose a plan, and set the country and IP type in the dashboard. The dashboard gives you a server address, a port, a username and a password; you enter those four values in your browser or in the tool you use.

### How can you tell a good-quality proxy?

Quality is measured on your own target site. Is the IP's registration consistent with the product name, is the location as declared, are speed and the share of successful responses stable through the day? None of this can be read off a sales page; a one-day test with a small plan shows all of it.

### Is there such a thing as an unlimited residential proxy?

Some providers price residential by number of connections or by bandwidth instead of by traffic, and call that "unlimited"; on those plans the limit is on speed. A low-cost residential plan that runs for ever and is unlimited in every respect does not fit the cost structure. If you want unlimited traffic, look at datacenter and static ISP products, which are priced per IP.

### Should I buy one proxy or several?

It depends on the job. If you manage one account or check the regional view of one site, a single static IP is enough. If you have several accounts, using a separate IP per account lowers the chance that a problem on one spreads to the others. In data collection jobs, the number of IPs is set by the request rate the target site accepts.

### Can I find out a proxy's speed before buying?

Not with certainty. Speed depends on where the proxy server, you and the target site are located, and on the time of day. Measure with a trial or the smallest plan, from your own line, against your own target. The method is in our [proxy testing guide](/blog/how-to-test-a-proxy).

### Should I buy a proxy or a VPN?

If your aim is to encrypt all the traffic on your device, a VPN is the right tool. If you want to send the traffic of a particular application or script out from a country and IP type of your choice, or to use many IPs, you need a proxy. The comparison is in [Proxy vs. VPN](/blog/proxy-vs-vpn).

Buying a proxy is less about picking a product and more about describing a job. Once the job is defined, the IP type, billing unit, rotation mode and protocol largely follow. What remains is weighing the provider: where the IPs come from, a written refund policy, whether support actually answers.
